fear of missing out
section 1
What really is FOMO, this fear of missing out? FOMO is worrying about what we might be loosing for ourselves because our hearts subtly lust after whatever can be gained for ourselves luke 8:14 . We want for ourselves what is best, most advantageous, comforting, exciting, etc., and so we feel the stress of the constant worry of bringing that about. Sure, we whitewash our worries with spiritual-like, corrupted-gobblygook such as: stewardship john 12:4-6 , justice luke 10:40-42 , caring mark 4:38 and even love for our family luke 9:57-62 , but in truth fear is born from one thing, selfishness matthew 25:24-26 i john 4:18 .
And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature.
my notes:
But Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples (he who was about to betray Him), said, "Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?" He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it.
But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, "Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me."
But the Lord said to her, "My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her."
Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke Him and said to Him, "Teacher, don’t You care if we drown?"
my notes:
As they were going along the road, someone said to Him, "I will follow you wherever you go."
And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head."
To another he said, "Follow Me."
But he said, "Lord, let me first go and bury my father."
And Jesus said to him, "Leave the dead to bury their own dead. But as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God."
Yet another said, "I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at my home." Jesus said to him, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God."
"Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’
"His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed?
There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.

section 2
FOMO comes from pursuing our own benefit rather than Christ’s; that is the eternal benefit of others philippians 2:20-21 . So how do we combat our natural fear of loss hebrews 2:14-15 so that we can rid ourselves of the hindrance of anxiety to serve other’s interest freely, the freedom that comes from the confidence of Christ ii corinthians 3:4-17 romans 1:5 ?
I have no one else like him, who will show genuine concern for your welfare. For everyone looks out for their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ.
Since the children have flesh and blood, He too shared in their humanity so that by His death He might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil—and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.
my notes:
Such is the confidence we have through Christ before God. It is not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything as coming from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God. He has made us competent to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter, but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
Now if the ministry that brought death, chiseled in letters on stones, came with glory, so that the Israelites were not able to gaze steadily at Moses’s face because of its glory, which was set aside, how will the ministry of the Spirit not be more glorious? For if the ministry that brought condemnation had glory, the ministry that brings righteousness overflows with even more glory. In fact, what had been glorious is not glorious now by comparison because of the glory that surpasses it. For if what was set aside was glorious, what endures will be even more glorious.
Since, then, we have such a hope, we act with great boldness. We are not like Moses, who used to put a veil over his face to prevent the Israelites from gazing steadily until the end of the glory of what was being set aside, but their minds were hardened. For to this day, at the reading of the old covenant, the same veil remains; it is not lifted, because it is set aside only in Christ. Yet still today, whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their hearts, but whenever a person turns to the Lord, the veil is removed.
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. We all, with unveiled faces, are looking as in a mirror at the glory of the Lord and are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory; this is from the Lord Who is the Spirit.
Through Him we received grace and apostleship to call all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith for His name’s sake.

section 3
Let us build our faith by first reasoning out the appropriate response to God’s grace to us romans 12:1 isaiah 1:18 . To begin with, faith cannot be built in a vacuum of mere human thought. Picture yourself drawing something. It is created now, right? No, a conception is not a creation until it is actually made. We have many ideas, thoughts, plans, etc., but the creation of them is not by our mere thought or intent. God is the only Creator Who can do such a wondrous work genesis 1:3-25 .
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.
"Come now, let us reason together, says the LORD: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.
my notes:
And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light...God said, "Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear." And it was so... And God said, "Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth." And it was so... And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth." And it was so... And God said, "Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds—livestock and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds." And it was so...my notes:
section 4
We have to labor, rework and even practice to bring even a form of our creations to fruition, lest they come to absolutely nothing isaiah 26:18 . Our faith is much like this. We can reason it out, but until it exits the vacuum of mere human thought out to practice galatians 5:6 , your faith will not be built up into fruitful, supreme confidence ii peter 1:3-11 romans 8:38-39 . So, to overcome FOMO we must practice what we believe so that we can understand what we believe with confidence philemon 6 .
We were with child, we writhed in labor, but we gave birth to wind. We have not brought salvation to the earth, and the people of the world have not come to life.
For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.
my notes:
His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of Him Who called us by His own glory and goodness. Through these He has given us His very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins. Therefore, my brothers, be all the more eager to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never fall, and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
I pray that your partnership with us in the faith may be effective in deepening your understanding of every good thing we share for the sake of Christ.
